Profile / Bio
Kaa Shaayí (aka Justin) is a Tlingit artist dedicated to exploring Formline design, the traditional visual language of his ancestors. His work thoughtfully bridges this enduring art form with contemporary contexts, creating dialogues between traditional aesthetics and modern expression.
A two-time recipient of research grants from the Bill Holm Center at the Burke Museum, Kaa Shaayí's practice is grounded in careful study of historical Tlingit objects. In 2024, he graduated with highest honors from Northwest Indian College, earning a Bachelor of Arts in Native Studies Leadership with an emphasis on Northwest Coast Design.
His public art can be seen throughout the region, including the "For Mom" mural created for Blaine's OverAll Walls 2024 festival. Through his artwork and community involvement, Kaa Shaayí not only honors Tlingit artistic traditions but also inspires appreciation for the rich, evolving tradition of Northwest Coast Native Art.
Based in Ferndale, Washington, he serves as Vice-Chair of the Ferndale Arts Commission and sits on the boards of the Friends of Sheldon Jackson Museum and Cedar Spirit Foundation, an organization that empowers Indigenous students through funding. In addition to his artistic practice, Kaa Shaayí operates a Whatcom County based sign shop, bringing his design expertise to commercial applications.
